The hustle narrative says sleep is for the weak. The actual people who hold elite output over years say the opposite.
What the data shows
Across founders, athletes, surgeons, performers, traders — people whose work demands sustained cognitive output — the average sleep duration is higher than the general population's, not lower.
The ones who sustain elite performance are the ones who protect the recovery side ferociously.
Why early-to-bed wins
Growth hormone release peaks in the first half of the night. Slow-wave (deep) sleep concentrates in the early portion. Going to bed at 11 vs 1am isn't just two hours of sleep — it's qualitatively different recovery.
The behavioural cost
Late-night scrolling, late-night working, late-night socialising — all cost more recovery than they appear to. The hour from 11pm-12am is worth more than the hour from 7am-8am.
How to actually do it
Anchor sleep time first, then work backwards. If 11pm is bedtime, wind-down starts at 9:30pm. Build the protocol back from there.
MHODE OFF supports the wind-down step.
