Quitting alcohol? Why your sleep gets worse before it gets better

People often quit drinking expecting sleep to immediately improve. For many, the first 2–6 weeks bring the opposite — racing thoughts, difficulty falling asleep, vivid dreams, more wake-ups.

What's happening

Alcohol was acting as a heavy GABA agonist (sedating the nervous system) for years. Without it, the brain has to rebuild its own inhibitory signalling. The transition period can be uncomfortable.

What supports the transition

  • Consistent bedtime, dark cool room
  • Aggressive caffeine cutoff
  • Magnesium-rich diet (often depleted by chronic alcohol use)
  • Calming compounds that support the nervous-system rebuild without forcing sedation
  • Patience — sleep usually normalises by month two or three

Why MHODE OFF, specifically

Heavy melatonin or sedative replacements just create a different dependency. MHODE OFF uses magnesium glycinate (replenishes commonly depleted stores), L-theanine, GABA, apigenin, tart cherry, lavender — supporting compounds, not sedatives. Non-habit forming.

If you're in early recovery, work with a healthcare professional. Some sleep medications interact with alcohol withdrawal protocols.
