Shift work breaks the normal AM/PM framing. A night-shift nurse's 'morning' might start at 8pm. A pilot's body clock might be confused.
The MHODE framework still applies — you just remap the labels.
The shift
MHODE ON is for your activation window. Whether that's 6am or 9pm, take it at the start of your high-demand block.
MHODE OFF is for your wind-down window. 30–60 minutes before your sleep period, whenever that lands.
Light protocol for shift workers
- Bright light during your work shift (mimics 'morning')
- Block light aggressively before sleep — blackout, blue blockers if needed
- Anchor sleep timing as consistently as possible across days off
What to avoid
Heavy melatonin on rotating rosters (downregulates your own production unpredictably). High-dose caffeine within 6 hours of your sleep window.
Where MHODE fits
Non-habit forming, dose-controlled, format that works around any clock. Both ON and OFF support shift-worker rituals.
